This past weekend I had the pleasure to go back home for a family get together, and while there I visited the church that I attended during my “growing up years”. The message was on “The Great Commission” and was taken from the Acts 1:1-5 and Matthew 28:19-20.
Here’s a summary:
God’s plan of salvation extends to everyone. From beginning to end, it wasn’t limited to one family or group.
Gen....

New blog post - Jackasses, Mules, and Stallions. http://bit.ly/11mfnv
In a talk given at TheResurgence Raleigh Boot Camp entitled ‘The Biblical Mandate on the Man’, Scott Thomas describes some qualifications of a church planter. The first two thirds of this message were good, but the last third in my opinion was fantastic. He encourages church leaders to call men to a manly, strong, radical adventure.
Towards that end he claims that churches tend to produce three...

Tonight: 2.25 mi. in 19:49. Not exactly gold medal pace, but it’s only week 2.
Fifteen years ago today I asked my wife on our first date! http://bit.ly/qcbPt
On April, 23 1994 I went on my last “first date”. At the prompting of my friend, Matt Swain, I asked a beautiful young lady to a movie - White Fang. Neither of us had any idea that 15 years later we’d be married, have two kids, and be head over heels for each other.
This week Jenny and I have been looking back at last 15 years, and there are so many good memories. Our first date, our many...

Ran 1.6 miles (no laughing I’m working up to 5), then ate a big brownie (ok, you can laugh now).
Conversation
Most of the conversation at this meeting was around what it means to succeed. Does God bless nations that adhere to the ‘moral code’ described in the Bible? Are the current economic problems in the U.S. linked to moral decline? In other words… if people in the U.S. started acting more religious (prayer back in schools, fewer abortions, and fewer liberals in public office) would God...

I’ve been trying to memorize this section of Psalm 62 this week. For some reason I’ve kind of neglected the Psalms to some extent in the past, but it seems like certain of them have seemed especially relevant recently.
Ps. 62:5-8:
Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my...
One thing I’ve been repenting of a lot recently is chasing after the approval and respect of people. I’ve come to see this as an idol of mine. I’ve spent a lot of my life stressing out about what people think about me. I push myself to exhaustion at work in an effort to be liked and respected. I put on “masks” to hide parts of me that I don’t like or that I don’t think others will like.

Summary
So, King Nebby has evidently forgotten about his statement in the last chapter that Daniel’s God was “God of gods and Lord of kings”. He’s set out to build a giant idol, and is threatening to kill anyone that doesn’t bow down and worship the image. The method of execution is burning by being cast into the “fiery furnace” (perhaps the one used to melt down all that gold. The idol is made...
Summary
God gives King Nebby a disturbing dream. It seems that the dream keeps occurring, and bothers him so much that he can’t even sleep. The king calls in his spiritual advisers and asks them to interpret the dream. To add a significant level of difficulty, he refuses to tell them what he saw in his dream. Then he really ups the stakes when he threatens them with death and the destruction of...

So, you may have noticed, I’m a bit behind on book club posts. I didn’t make entries for 1 John 4, 5, 2 John, and 3 John. Chalk it up to a crazy schedule at work and at home. I have notes from some of those discussions, and may eventually post them. In an effort to not fall completely out of the habit of publishing our book club discussion notes, I’m going to pick up with...

Heaven by Randy Alcorn
Be honest - have you ever secretly thought that heaven sounds boring? Have you thought it might just a big church service that will never end? Or maybe that sitting around on a cloud playing the harp might get old after a while? Perhaps you’re more ’spiritual’ than me and, while you’re looking forward to heaven, you don’t really have ideas on what it might be like....

Did you know that in the U.S. we spend more on pornography than we do on country music, rock music, classical music, Broadway plays, and ballet combined?
Shocking, but this is the claim made by Mark Driscoll in his short book titled Porn-again Christian. The destructive influence of pornography is felt by Christians and non-Christians - […]

I changed something BIG in my prayer life this week - I started praying out loud with my eyes open… in my office at work.

One who hopes in Christ purifies himself. Does this mean that our hope purifies us in the sight of God, or that since we are meditating on Christ that we take action to change the way we behave? […]
